Wycombe Wanderers put on a commanding performance against Winchester away from home on Sunday, with a 2-0 finish securing their first win of the season.
A steady and controlled first half remained goalless until the 40th minute, when Wycombe regained control from a Winchester throw-on. A seamless link-up play between Ashley Harte, Amy Leach and Sarah Davern allowed Katie Riddington to convert the attack with a stunning finish into the top-right corner. The Chairgirls maintained their lead into half-time.
Wycombe’s second-half opened with more domination in attack, however, a referee warning saw the Chairgirls down to 10 players for 10 minutes early into the half. Being a player down did not stop Wycombe from doubling their lead, as Amy Leach solo-attacked Winchester’s defence before Emma Kern’s smashing strike hit the back of the net, sending Wycombe two up in the 54th minute.
The Chairgirls continued to attack for the remainder of the match, with close opportunities for Molly Carter and Krystal Follett later into the second-half. The match also saw a strong defensive performance from Wycombe, with goalkeeper Chelsea Coles calmly saving a late corner attempt from Winchester to keep a clean-sheet.
First team manager, Carl Simon, commented on his side’s impressive display noting that the performance was one of “a team evolving”. He added, “For us there have been a couple of mistakes here and there in a few games, but today there wasn’t any.
“The things we have identified, analysed and worked on had been eradicated today. That’s all it is, we go game-by-game and keep doing things the right way, and we will get the results.”
Simon also gave praise to “absolutely fantastic” player of the match, Maddi Armstrong, who has recently been introduced into the first team and slotted in seamlessly to aid Wycombe in their defensive success against Winchester.
The Chairgirls are set to face Ascot away on Sunday 1st October in the FA Cup, where they aim to continue their winning streak.
