Meet Darius Charles at Wycombe Wanderers vs Exeter City on Saturday 5th August. Our first Wycombe Legend to be starring in the NEW Legends Lounge. He will be accompanied by our very own Phil Catchpole for a pre match interview and dissect the game post-match, before the Man of the Match Award is presented.
Darius Charles is a Wycombe Wanderers legend - an incredible feat for a player who made just 43 appearances for the club, but it was the quality rather than quantity of his performances that etched his name into Chairboys folklore.
Arriving from AFC Wimbledon in 2018 with a modest footballing background behind him at Ebbsfleet and Stevenage, the defender was plagued by injuries in his first season at Adams Park and was advised by doctors to retire from the sport.
Overcoming not just the physical limitations on his body but also the psychological scars of being potentially denied the chance to do what he loved, Darius fought his way back to match fitness in the summer of 2019 and earned a new contract, prolonging his career to spectacular effect.
He became a rock in the heart of defence, and an inspirational figure in the changing room as the Blues embarked on an incredible journey into the League 1 play-offs, culminating in their first ever promotion to the Championship with a victory over Oxford United at Wembley.
Darius was the embodiment of the spirit that carried the club to glory; a never-say-die warrior-like attitude, and a pride to wear the shirt. He proclaimed that Adams Park was ‘our house, and you play by our rules’ - a phrase that will echo around the stadium for generations to come.
He is a man guaranteed red-carpet treatment any time he returns to HP12 - not as though his humble and warm-natured spirit would allow it - and continues to inspire and mentor those around him in his current capacity in player welfare at Manchester City.
