A tough battle sees the young Chairgirls defeated in Wokingham.
An early start for the team on a grey and wet September morning as the young Chairgirls took on Wokingham and Embrook.
Wycombe started well and the first 20 minutes were evenly contested. The Chairgirls carved open several opportunities with Brooke Sanders’s effort from 25 yards out hitting the far post. It was Wokingham who scored first however, as a 30 yard free-kick hit the back of the net.
Wycombe continued to press high but a mix up in defence gifted Wokingham an open goal from 18 yards which they made no mistake in coverting.
Half time: Wokingham & Embrook 2-0 Wycombe
The Chairgirls came out battling during the second half and dominated much of the game. Wokingham struggled to get out of their half and Wycombe must have had a further 10 attempts on goal but could not get past the Wokingham goalkeeper who gave an outstanding woman of the match performance. Jess Gomes came close and was unlucky not to convert a goal line cross from Jess Fuller, with a glancing header from a corner then narrowly missing the far post. Naomi Tilley was denied at close range by a fantastic save with 10 minutes to go, and once again the goalkeeper stopped Brooke Sanders who had made a great run managing to hold off the impressive Wokingham defenders before hitting a cross goal shot.
Despite this being the first loss of the season for the team, it was one of their best team performances to date. The girls showed determination, resilience and bravery with several stepping up to play in different positions due to illness and injury.
